Innovation in Approaches in Play Therapy: Working with LGBTQ+ Youth

About this event

In this 2-day didactic and experiential training, play therapists and mental health practitioners working with individuals and families of the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) Community will gain an understanding of the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) of individuals and families and their intersectional identities as it applies to play therapy interventions and mental health practice policy.

Throughout the two days Play Therapist will developmental through the lens of Crenshaw’s Intersectionality, the role of identity and development play in working with Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) children and adolescents. This workshop will examine culturally sensitive language, gender-affirming practices, and strategies, play therapy interventions, and the interplay of the therapeutic powers of play. Participants will examine the intersectionality of the relevance of SOGIE Community populations, including historical, political, and policy perspectives, the development of SOGIE identity-formation, health, mental health, familial issues, and SOGIE issues through childhood and adolescence. Participants will learn relevant play therapy interventions that can be applied in the playroom.

    A transformative innovator, entrepreneur, educator, author, and social worker passionate about driving change, Kurt W. Oster, LBS (PA), LICSW-S (AL), LCSW- QS (FL), LCSW (PA & VA), BCD, RPT™ & Certified Playmaker is entering his sixteenth year in the mental health field. He is the Owner/President & CEO of VonOstir Innovation Services, PLLC, and the Chief Clinical Officer of Aspire Integrated Healthcare Solutions, LLC. Mr. Oster is a Pennsylvania Licensed Behavioral Specialist (LBS), an Alabama Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), a Florida, Pennsylvania, & Virginia Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and a Florida and New Jersey Certified PreK-12 School Social Worker (CSSW). He is a Member of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, a Board-Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work (BCD), and a Registered Play Therapist (RPT)™. In April 2024, Mr. Oster became a Certified Playmaker with the Life is Good Playmaker Project. Mr. Oster holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Urban Studies from Rutgers University, a Master in Social Work (MSW) from the University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from the University of Southern California, and a Master of Science (MS) in Homeland Security and Emergency Management from Colorado Technical University. Additionally, Mr. Oster holds certifications including the ADHD-Certified Clinical Services Professional (ADHD-CCSP), Autism Spectrum Disorder-Clinical Specialist (ASD-CS), Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), and FEMA Professional Continuity Practitioner, Level I. As an LCSW, Mr. Oster serves children, adolescents, young adults, their families, LGBTQIA+, and individuals working through Trauma. Outside of his clinical practice, Mr. Oster is an author and presents information on youth civic engagement, SOGIE mental health, disaster preparedness, and emergency management to the international community. Mr. Oster, LBS, LCSW, ACSW, BCD, RPT™, is currently writing his first textbook in LGBTQ+ Play Therapy, which will be published in June 2025.

  • Tyler Tooley, MS, LPC, C-APTS, Registered Play Therapist™
    Tyler is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified AutPlay® Therapy Provider, and is a Registered Play Therapist™. Tyler identifies as Neurodivergent, and is the owner of Tooley Therapy in St. Louis, MO, where he specializes in working with people who are also neurodivergent (Autistic, ADHD, OCD, SPD, gifted, etc.). Tyler integrates AutPlay Therapy with Neurodivergent teenagers, young adults & adults, by utilizing technology including video and computer games, iPads, and virtual reality (VR) into his sessions. Tyler is currently conducting research and developing training programs for other clinicians interested in technology in the playroom.

Event Learning Objectives

  • Develop and utilize a comprehensive vocabulary of LGBTQ+ terminology, concepts, and identities to foster greater cultural competence and sensitivity within play therapy.
  • Establish and maintain safe and affirming playrooms that are conducive to the emotional well-being of LGBTQ+ clients, ensuring an environment of acceptance and support.
  • Apply transformative inclusion principles to actively promote equity, diversity, and inclusivity within play therapy, fostering an environment of acceptance and support for all clients.
  • Identify unique challenges and strengths commonly experienced by neurodivergent children and teens in play therapy through group discussions and case study analyses, and apply inclusive play therapy techniques to support them.
  • Examine best practices, ethical impacts, and theoretical models in play therapy as they apply to Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE), and incorporate culturally competent standards of care for clients and their families.

Evaluations, Post-test, and Certificates:
IMPORTANT re: Evaluations, Post-test, and Certificates:

Registrants must attend live with the camera to receive CEs and a certificate of completion. Our administrator will monitor the on-camera presence throughout the program.
Registrants must submit an evaluation and complete a post-test administered at 2:15 EASTERN upon the webinar presentation conclusion. Participants must complete and submit both evaluation and post-tests with an 80% passing grade within 24 hours of the conclusion of this live webinar to receive CEs and a certificate of completion. PLEASE set aside time between the webinar’s presentation conclusion at 2:00 and 2:15 EASTERN to complete and submit your evaluation and quiz.
Registrants will be provided a link in the CHAT box on Zoom AND via email after the webinar for the evaluation and post-test to be completed.
Certificates of completion will be sent out to all who complete evaluations and post-test requirements per the above guidelines within 7 days after the live webinar date.
