Transformative Practice in Play Therapy Intersectionality with LGBTQ+ Children, Adolescents, & Their Families.

CE Hours 6 2 Play Therapy Skills and Methods 2 Play Therapy Cultural Diversity 2 Play Therapy Special Topic

About this live event

This didactic and experiential training will assist play therapists and mental health practitioners working with individuals and families of the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) Community. Participants will gain an understanding of the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) of individuals and families and their intersectional identities as it applies to play therapy interventions and mental health practice policy. Participants will examine, through the developmental lens of Crenshaw’s Intersectionality, the role of identity and development play in working with Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) children and adolescents. This workshop will examine culturally sensitive language, gender-affirming practices, and strategies, play therapy interventions, and the interplay of the therapeutic powers of play. Participants will examine the intersectionality of the relevance of SOGIE Community populations, including historical, political, and policy perspectives, the development of SOGIE identity-formation, health, mental health, familial issues, and SOGIE issues through childhood and adolescence. Participants will learn relevant play therapy interventions that can be applied in the playroom.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate insight of the role and challenges of personal bias and intersectionality and their influence on play therapy and clinical practice.
  • Examine best practices in play therapy and identity development models as they apply to and identify the critical relationship between Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE).
  • Name three standard vocabularies and SOGIE culturally sensitive terms utilized in clinical practice and play therapy with their clients and their families.
  • Discuss at least two ethical impacts of the experience of and intersecting identities in the context of play therapy for members of the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) Community.
  • List two theoretical and ethical models and standards of care that are culturally competent in play therapy in order to work with clients and their families of the SOGIE Community.
  • Examine, through the Therapeutic Powers of Play, two social, emotional, and psychological impacts of Sexual Orientations, Gender Identity, and Expression in children and adolescents' development and daily lives.
  • Demonstrate nine affirmative play dynamics specific to SOGIE clients and their families and incorporate three of the powers of play and clinical considerations into treatment.
  • Describe two of the values and benefits of affirmative approaches in play therapy as they pertain to helping families and caregivers support and affirm SOGIE youth.
